1961 VW 23 window Samba Camper

This is a 1961 T2 23 window VW Samba camper. Imported from Australia so it is right hand drive this Samba has just under gone a three year nut and bolt restoration with no expense spared. This Samba is possibly the best in the country having already won several first prizes at shows across the UK and it has been featured on the cover of the VW camper magazine with a written feature in December 2017 edition.

This is the Samba version of VWs T1 camper fleet and is called the 23 window Samba because, you guessed it, there are 23 windows. The front windscreen is a split screen with the Safari option meaning the windows fold out for ventilation. Ideal for when you lived in Australia in the 1960s before air conditioning was invented. The rear window does the same so you can have air flow right through the Samba. On the sides there are four large pop out windows and above these in the roof are four fixed sky lights on either side. Then to cap it all off there is a ragtop sun roof which is idea for standing up in for photos.

Unlike a standard T2 camper this does not have a full kitchen area and instead has two bench seats in the back made from oak wood with soft coverings. This increases the seating area from three to five or six in the back and one up front next to the chauffeur.  It was known in the USA as the VW Micro bus and in Europe as the Samba or Alpine as it was designed for touring the Alps.

Powered by the iconic air cooled flat four engine it makes the noise that tells you even with your eyes closed that here comes a VW but which one. Sounds a little throatier than the standard 1200cc as this Samba boasts a 1915cc 105bhp beast. Open your eyes and you will be astonished at the fit and finish of this Samba. The photos are good but do not do it the justice it deserves and we advise you to see this one in person. The colours are known as Turkis green (Turquoise) and pearl white which really suits the lines of the vehicle and its high quality chrome finishing’s.
